Matsushita Reports Declining Profit

Costs for a massive cell-phone battery recall helped depress profit for the second fiscal quarter 17 percent at Matsushita, which makes Panasonic brand products.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.’s July-September profit sank to 65.81 billion yen ($573.8 million) from 79.29 billion yen the same period the previous year, the company said Tuesday.

Quarterly sales edged up 1 percent to 2.286 trillion yen ($19.93 billion) from 2.253 trillion yen a year earlier on brisk global demand for flat-panel TVs, semiconductors, digital cameras and air conditioners, the Osaka-based manufacturer said. Read more
